Canal ranger sought to help waterway visitors go with the flow

As the restoration of the Droitwich Canals nears completion British Waterways is on the lookout for volunteer rangers to be a part of it and bring that personal touch to the region’s picturesque waterways – the Mid Worcestershire Ring.

Being a volunteer ranger offers a wide range of opportunities based on individual interests, skills and experience. Volunteer rangers could help man the locks or undertake inspections along stretches of the canal. Other opportunities include leading guided walks, helping with water control and doing various tasks such as vegetation management, lock painting and generally keeping the towpath a pleasant and attractive place to visit.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer ranger is invited to come along to the Droitwich Volunteer Meet & Greet Event on Tuesday 15 February 2011 between 3.00pm – 7.00pm. The event is taking place at Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre, Briar Mill, Droitwich, Worcestershire WR9 0RZ.

As the Government prepares to transfer the canals and rivers in England & Wales into a new charity next year British Waterways is keen for everyone in the community to enjoy them. Volunteer posts like these will give communities greater involvement in the running of their local canals and rivers.

British Waterways’ Volunteer Supervisor Suzanne Byrne said the roles would be ideal for outgoing individuals and groups who enjoyed mixing with people and helping deal with requests.

“The roles offer personal health benefits with plenty of walking and some physical work assisting boaters through the locks,” said Suzanne.

If you would like to get involved in this exciting opportunity to support the heritage and environment of your local waterway, we would love to hear from you.
